Miners working naked in Sicily's sulphur mines.

 I didn't know about this until quite recently when I accidentally stumbled across one of these photos and, investigating further, found quite a story behind the subject. There is a horror side to this too which, one hopes, is now confined to history, namely, that a couple of centuries ago, probably going back much earlier, as well as men (and even some women) young boys were used as literal slave labour in this work, their diminutive bodies more readily able to access narrow, hacked-out corridors and into confined spaces than workers of adult dimensions. However, the men in the photos I use here as illustration, which I'm given to understand date from the 1960s and later, all appear to be in good physical condition, some even cheerful, so no appearance of forced labour here. (Sulphur mining in Sicily, to the extent that it's done at all, is now no longer by manual means. The main location of such manual mining is now Indonesia, still with hideous effects on the bodies of miners, even fatal). 

Sulphur mining used to be widespread in Sicily because that island in particular is rich in volcanic rock. (Uses of the extracted mineral include the manufacture of fertilisers, matches, detergents, batteries and treatment of rubber). 

Manual mining was it its height in the mid-19th century when, I'd imagine, slavery for such work would be commonplace. These days much of the mining is by automated means.

It's hardly surprising that in underground  temperatures of 50 Celsius and higher, in bygone days many of the men would have self-elected to work stark naked, though I doubt if it would have compulsory!
